BeschreibungOriginally published in 1909, this biography by Isabel Wallace recounts the life of her adoptive father, the little-recognized William Hervy Lamme Wallace, the highest-ranking Union officer to fall at the battle of Shiloh. Ulysses S. Grant later praised Wallace in 1868 as "the equal of the best, if not the very best, of the Volunteer Generals with me at the date of his death".
PortraitIsabel Wallace was only four years old when her father fell at Shiloh. She lived at The Oaks, the family home in Ottawa, Illinois, until her death in 1933. John Y. Simon is a professor of history at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is the editor of "The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant," published by Southern Illinois University Press.
