BeschreibungExcerpt from Laurella: And Other Poems
Most of the poems in this volume were written many years ago, and several have already appeared in Magazines and in Kottabos - a periodical published each term in connection with Dublin University.
The subject of 'Laurella' is taken from Paul Heyse's prose tale, La Rabbiata; that of 'The Daughter of Hippocrates' from the legend, as told by Leigh Hunt in the Indicator. This latter poem was originally written before the publication of Mr. Morris's Earthly Paradise, so that the coincidence, in point of subject, between it and 'The Lady of the Land' is purely accidental. There is no similarity in treatment, the dénoument being so different in each case as to constitute a different story.
