BeschreibungExcerpt from Aristotle on the Constitution of Athens
How soon conjectural emendation will have said its last word on the Constitution of Athens it is difficult to predict. Until that moment arrives is translation premature? If a remnant of ancient architecture, half buried in the sand, were discovered in the Sahara, the public would probably be glad to have a photograph of its actual appearance before the work of excavation was completed, and perhaps English readers would rather that the power of forming an opinion for themselves on the substantive character and interest of the partly recovered work of Aristotle should not be postponed to the date when textual criticism shall have completed its labours. To meet this assumed demand the following translation is offered.
