Excerpt from St. Columba: A Study of Social Inheritance, and Spiritual Development

The Frontispiece - St Columba on the Hill of Angels, is from a drawing by Mr John Duncan, A. R. S. A.

The drawing on Cover is from a sketch model for the statue of St Columba, by Mr Percy Portsmouth, A. R. S. A., Professor of Sculpture in the Edinburgh College of Art.

Around this model centres the Epilogue Scene of the Masque of Ancient Learning, which follows upon the commemoration of St Columba and his missions. This Epilogue anticipates the erection of the statue, and suggests a site - a literal 'St Columba's Place' - upon the Historic Mile of Old Edinburgh, which after long dilapidation and neglect, is again in process of conservation and renewal.

After Iona itself, no situation can be more appropriate than this one, midway between four Assemblies of kindred denominations, and central among so many other churches and centres of goodwill and fellowship not far away.

As a continued suggestion - not as; an appreciable sacrifice - any proceeds to author and publishers from this volume will be devoted to the movement for the erection of this memorial. (The amount required is £800.)
