Dr Simon Bromley is Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy in the Faculty of Social Sciences at The Open University. He is the author of American Hegemony and World Oil (Polity Press, 1990) and Rethinking Middle East Politics (Polity Press, 1993). He has recently contributed to and edited Governing the European Union (Sage, 2001). Professor Maureen Mackintosh is Professor of Economics at The Open University. Dr William Brown is Lecturer in Government and Politics at The Open University. He is author of The European Union and Africa: the restructuring of north-south relations (I.B. Tauris, 2001). Professor Marc Wuyts is Professor in Quantitative Applied Economics at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague.
