PortraitKelly Washbourne is an Associate Professor of Translation in the Institute for Applied Linguistics at Kent State University, and teaches pragmatic translation courses at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels. He earned his MA in Translation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and his PhD in Hispanic Literature and Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His works include the book translations Literary Memoirs by Jose Victorino Lastarria (Oxford's Library of Latin America, 2000), Incomplete Democracy by Manuel Garreton (with Gregory Horvath; University of North Carolina Press, Latin America in Translation / En Traduccion / Em Traducao, 2003); After-Dinner Conversation, a critical translation and introduction of De sobremesa, the 1896 novel by Jose Asuncion Silva (University of Texas Press's Pan-American Literature in Translation series, 2005); and An Anthology of Spanish American Modernismo, in English Translation with Spanish Text (edited; translated with Sergio Waisman, MLA Texts and Translations series, 2007). He most recently completed an English-language edition of Nobel Prize-winning writer Miguel Angel Asturias's Leyendas de Guatemala. Curricular co-coordinator for an academic enhancement program for Latino youth in Akron, Ohio, called Proyecto RAICES, he also interprets for a migrant worker health clinic.
